Meta Explores Semiconductor Collaboration with Samsung, Seeking AI Chip Independence

Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Meta, indicated the multinational technology conglomerate's interest in collaborating with Samsung Electronics in the artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor sector. This move is aimed at reducing dependence on the chip giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

Following a 30-minute meeting between Zuckerberg and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol in Seoul, a senior official stated that Zuckerberg acknowledged Samsung's status as one of the world's largest foundry companies and sees it as a key point in potential cooperation.

"Zuckerberg said Samsung's status can be the key point in their cooperation," the official noted.

Zuckerberg expressed concerns about Meta's current reliance on TSMC, describing the situation as "volatile." Meta had previously sought TSMC's assistance in manufacturing two types of AI chips unveiled in May, designed by the U.S. firm.

"His remarks mean that Samsung's status can help in stabilizing Meta's heavy reliance on TSMC under the current geopolitical situation," the official added.

Meta's Korean operation refrained from confirming the details of Zuckerberg's conversation with President Yoon.

After a dinner meeting with Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong, discussions between Meta and Samsung remained undisclosed.
